Health

Education is the main thing, but of course the health of the children is so important too.

eye_dentist (10K) Our main contribution is our dental program. Every week we take around 24 children to the dentists for check ups and dental work. The clinic that we use has been provided by Keep Dentistry Alive and the Archdiocese of New Orleans Mission Group, and run by local group Cristo Sano.

We only have to pay the cost of materials and transport for the children. Each afternoon our volunteers set off from different schools with six young students, (sometimes willing, sometimes a bit hesitant) and make their way to the dental clinic. Once at the clinic volunteers spend their time reading to, or playing games with the waiting children, or occasionally in with the dentist holding the hand of a particularly timid patient.

Volunteers and visitors often bring toothbrushes, which we supply to the children along with toothpaste, and volunteers sometimes give toothbrushing classes to the children.

We take children to the optometrist too when they are in need of eyeglasses and we have funding available.

Both of these programs are supported by donors.

We also host visiting medical groups who want to run clinics in any of the schools where we work.
