Group Volunteering

Here in Granada, Nicaragua, La Esperanza Granada has hosted quite a number of groups over the past years.

Whether you are a service club, college group, volunturism group, or just some friends looking for something different to do you can get involved and help make a difference.

Various projects that have been undertaken by visiting groups range from planting a garden bed to building classrooms, whilst also interacting with the school children through things such as sport, craft projects, English tutoring etc. When possible we encourage groups to take children on an excursion with them, this way you can share the excitement of them having a very special day visiting some of the countries wonderful national parks etc. which they would otherwise never have the opportunity to do.

Your group size can be from five to fifty, and past groups have worked anywhere from a morning to a month there is so much that needs to be done in the schools here, we can always find something that will suit you.

It is normal for groups to pay for their own food and accommodation (as do our longer term volunteers), and to cover the cost of all materials used in their work. We will also ask for a small contribution to our administration costs.

We can help you with booking accommodation, arranging airport pickup, arranging day tours etc. if you wish, or you can simply let us know what times you will be available to work in one of our schools and make your own arrangements whichever suits your group best.

We have local volunteers who will work along with your group, planning and organizing gives valuable experience to these young people. The building/repair/maintenance projects that groups take on bring tremendous benefits to the schools that the local communities simply dont have funds for, and best of all with each person who visits you bring an extra smile to a child, and in taking theirs home with you, help spread hope for a better future for the youth of Nicaragua.

FAMILY VOLUNTEERING

FAMILIES FOR FAMILIES

100_0547 (23K)Our main focus is always education, however we recognize other desperate needs of the community. We decided that we can coordinate assistance in improving housing in the communities where we work, that will also tie in with education.

As a family, you can work together and help a local family, living in poverty, to improve their home. Your level of participation is up to you, both financially and physically.

A typical family volunteer stay could be three to five days, continuous or split, you decide.

Typical financial contribution could be $300 to $500, or more, you decide. Minimum requirement is $300 per family, which includes a $50 contribution to La Esperanza Granada. $250 would be spent on materials for improving the house of your family.

SDC11326 (15K) Local families are chosen by participating in a raffle free raffle tickets are given to families whose children have good school attendance. (low attendance rates are one of the major failings in the Nicaraguan schools) Each family chosen will make a wish list of home improvements, which we will send to you with costs of materials. Along with photos of them and their home. You can then chose how much you would like to do, and how much of the labor you would like to participate in. Whether it is a lot or a little, rest assured it will be warmly welcomed. Some visiting families may want to work with their local family, all day, each day for some they may visit to take before and after photos and bring the local family into town for ice cream in the park. It is up to you to chose what is best for you and your own family.

One of our local volunteers will take you out there each day and stay with you to help with anything you might need and to help with communication (though they don't speak much English they are used to speaking with our long term volunteers who are from overseas).
