High School Sponsorship
We first started offering high school sponsorships in the 2005 school year, for children who have completed the six years of primary school and wanted to attend high school.
High school runs for five years, and without this sponsorship these children would not be able to attend. Only 30% of the schoolchildren in Nicaragua complete primary
school, and one of the main reasons for this is the knowledge that there will be no opportunity for them to continue with their education.
We offer this sponsorship to the children who have completed primary grades in the schools where we assist. Children who accept a sponsorship sign an accord
that they will put their best efforts forward as well as constant attendance. Also that they will complete all homework assigned and attend tutoring when needed.
In the 2011 school year the costs to the sponsor are $260 for the full year. This is likely to increase slightly each year as local costs rise.
For those who have accepted a sponsorship we then ask them to attend a high school preparation course during the two months of vacation
in December and January. This course is aimed at bridging the gap between a village primary school, and a secondary college in the town.
We bring the children into town to familiarize them, give them some computer lessons, work on their maths, grammar, and English, and generally
try to build their esteem and bond together ready for attendance at a large town school. During this time also we fit them with uniforms, organize
the books they need, and complete all the registration forms necessary. (there is a lot of bureaucratic red tape involved that their families may not be
able to manage without help).
We ask students to write a letter to their sponsors, and we send the sponsors a picture and short outline about each child. Sponsors are
encouraged to send pictures and information back to their children.
Once a child is attending secondary school, we monitor their attendance, and their levels in tests. We offer free tutoring to students in any subjects
that they are having problems with. Some of this tutoring is provided by our volunteers from around the world, some is provided by local university students,
especially in subjects such as grammar, science and areas that require help by someone who has passed through the Nicaraguan schools.
