Our focus is on education at a very basic level. The majority of our volunteers work with young children. The children in the early grades all go to school in the mornings, the later grades vary from school to school. Volunteers normally start in the schools at morning recess 9.15 and continue until noon. During this time the volunteers may help in the kindergarten class, tutor children in the early grades with their reading, writing or math, and teach classes as a group of arts and craft or sports. In addition to these school hours volunteers will spend two hours or so most afternoons, in various activities with the children, reading club, geography club, sports, playing sport with children, taking children from your school to the dentists, etc. Each school we work with has a group of volunteers and you would normally work in that one community for the duration of your stay.

The schools that we work with are all in villages, on the outskirts or outside Granada, currently seven different schools. Volunteers live in the town of Granada and travel out to the schools each day by bus, bicycle or on foot. We work in the schools with the approval of the local government department of education, and we are welcomed by the communities.
We also have volunteers who teach English in the schools with grades 5 and 6 these volunteers will usually work in several schools during the course of a week. The hours vary, and include lesson planning as well as face to face teaching with the children two or three volunteers will teach a class together.

There is no limit to the numbers of volunteers we need for positions such as kindergarten assistants, primary school tutors, English teachers for primary school, or positions in the vacation months of January in December. Our preferred time commitment is 8 weeks. There is not maximum time. There is some flexibility depending on your level of Spanish, your experience and the time of year, e.g. December and January which are the vacation months. During these months we are happy to accept volunteers for three or four weeks to work with children in vacation activity groups.

If you are living in Granada for some time, and have some spare time each week, there are various ways in which you could help us on a part time basis from teaching computers in the schools to taking children to the dentists, or tutoring high school children.
On-line assistance can be given through things such as translating, promotion, updating volunteer listings etc.
The major skill we require from you is your willingness to help others who may be less fortunate than yourself, and to enjoy being part of the organization and group that is La Esperanza Granada.
