University Scholarship

This is a wonderful program that we started at the beginning of 2008. To qualify for this program, young Nicaraguans must have completed their high school education, and be prepared to give their time to helping other children in the same poverty stricken circumstances that they grew up in, with their education.

Aimed at getting young people through university while taking part in the improvement of their community, and increasing their level of experience both with education, administration, and people skills, as well as their confidence and self esteem, this is a unique scholarship. The majority of Nicaraguans, unless they are from quite wealthy families, attend University (College) on weekends only and take a course over a five year period, rather than three.

In return for a stipend that allows them to contribute to their basic living costs to their families, as well as their university fees, they contribute 6 hours each day during the week, helping in the primary schools, tutoring secondary school children, and assisting with other community projects, such as childrens health programs, library programs etc.. Most of the time they are working in the schools, alongside our volunteers.

This is double boost for the future of the children, as it not only provides higher education, but also sets a role model for the young children in the schools and gives them hope as to what they may achieve.

The cost of a scholarship is $1320 per year, payable yearly for five years.
